Israel Revealed to the Eye is a community-based project whose mission is to document and preserve photos of the state and country, of its people and its history.
Its aim is to deepen the participation of people from all walks of life in the story of Israeli heritage throughout the generations by inviting them to participate in a project of visual documentation and preservation of photos from family and private albums. The project takes place in communities of all kinds throughout the country, and is part of the Tziyunei Derech program in the Ministry of Jerusalem and Heritage.
In the first stage, in commemoration of the 60th anniversary of the development towns, a pilot took place in Kiryat Shmona, Rosh Ha-ayn, Sderot and Yerucham
As part of the program for the empowerment of national heritage infrastructures in the Israeli Prime Minister’s Office, the project was expanded in 2011 to additional settlements all over the country. In 2013 other municipalities and settlements joined, including Tel Aviv.
The project is supervised by a professional academic team for visual documentation from the YBZ Photo Archives. A large part of the documentation work is carried out by volunteers who are engaged in every step of the process and bring with them good will, and rich experience and knowledge in various fields.
Anyone who lives in the country plays a part in its history. A person's private photo album represents the various lifestyles, customs and habits, and is testimony to the country’s diverse communities in development towns, agricultural settlements, cities and other communities.
