במאמרם 'נפילתה של ממלכת הגדעונים: תובנות
חדשות בעקבות ביקור ראשון בסֶגֶנֶת, בירת השלטון
היהודי בהרי סְמֵן' תובנות חדשות על נפילתה של
ממלכת הגדעונים באתיופיה; המאמר נכתב בעקבות
ביקור ראשון של החוקרים בעמק סגנת, בירת השלטון
היהודי בסמן באחרית ימיו. המערכה שהביאה לסופה
של ממלכת הגדעונים התרחשה בשנת 1626, ואז הגיע
לקיצו השלטון העצמי של קהילת ביתא ישראל (יהודי
אתיופיה). מערכה זו הייתה סופו של מאבק ממושך בין
הקיסר הסולומוני סוּסְנְיוֹס ובין גדעון, שליט הקהילה.
במסגרת מאבק זה התנהלו מסעות מלחמה וקרבות
סביב סגנת, בירתו של גדעון, בהרי סמן. המאמר מציג
לראשונה את המאבק בין גדעון לסוסניוס ואת נפילתה
של ממלכת הגדעונים בהקשרם הגיאוגרפי, על סמך
מקורות בני התקופה והמחקר הגיאוגרפי־היסטורי באזור.

In the English section, in their article, “The Fall
of the Kingdom of the Gideonites: New Insights
Following a First Visit to Sägänät, the Capital of
Jewish Rule in the Sǝmen Mountains,” Bar Kribus
and Elad Wexler present, for the first time, the
geographical context of the fall of the Kingdom
of the Gideonites in Ethiopia. The article was
written following the researchers’ first visit
to the Sägänät Valley, the capital of Jewish self-rule in Sǝmen in its final days, and provides new
insights into the campaign that brought about
the end of the Gideonite Kingdom in 1626, and
with it, the end of the self-rule of the Ethiopian
Jewish community (Betä Ǝsraʾel). This campaign
was the end of a long struggle between the
Solomonic emperor Susǝnyos and Gedewon,
the Betä Ǝsraʾel leader. As part of this struggle,
military campaigns and battles were waged
around Sägänät, Gedewon’s capital, in the Sǝmen
Mountains. The article presents for the first time
the struggle between Gedewon and Susǝnyos and
the fall of the Kingdom of the Gideonites in their
geographical context, based on contemporary
sources and geohistorical research in the region.
