מאמרו של תום פוגל 'דוד סלימאן ששון: אתנוגרף בין
מזרח למערב' מציג את דמותו ואת מחקריו האתנוגרפיים
של האספן והחוקר דוד סלימאן ששון )1942-1880(.
פוגל מתאר את נסיעתו של ששון מלונדון לבגדאד ובוחן
את כתיבתו האתנוגרפית בעקבות המסע ולאורך חייו.
מתוך דיון באופן שבו כתב ששון על אמונות עממיות
של יהודי בגדאד ותימן המחבר מציע להבחין בין
שתי תקופות בכתיבתו. התקופה הראשונה התאפיינה
בכתיבה ביקורתית על אמונות עממיות ובעיקר על
מאגיה, ואילו בתקופה השנייה ניכרה מגמה לייצוג
חיובי יותר של יהדות המזרח – בכתיבה אפולוגטית
על גופי הידע העממי או בבחירה לכתוב על נושאים
אחרים. פוגל מציע שבמעבר בין התקופות התעצבה
תודעתו של ששון הבגדאדי־ההודי־האנגלי כחוקר שחי
בלונדון ומשמש נציג של המזרח במערב.

Tom Fogel’s article, “David Solomon Sassoon: An
Ethnographer Between East and West,” presents
the persona and ethnographic research of the
collector and scholar David Suliman Sassoon
(1880–1942). Fogel describes Sassoon’s journey
from London to Baghdad and examines his
ethnographic writing following the journey
and throughout his life. Following a discussion
of how Sassoon wrote about the folk beliefs
of the Jews of Baghdad and Yemen, the author
suggests distinguishing between two periods in
his writing. The first period was characterized
by critical writing about folk beliefs and
especially about magic, while the second period
showed an inclination toward a more positive
representation of Eastern Jewry – in apologetic
writing about bodies of popular knowledge or
in choosing to write about other topics. Fogel
suggests that in the transition between the
periods, the Baghdadi-Indian-English Sassoon’s
awareness of himself as a researcher living in
London and serving as a representative of the
East in the West, crystallized.
