קתדרת מתנאל לחקר הקבלה במכון בן-צבי מקדמת את המחקר האקדמי של הקבלה, בדגש על הקבלה שנוצרה, נלמדה וננהגה בקרב יהודי ארצות ערב והאסלאם. מטרת המרכז היא לעורר עניין ומודעות לספרות זו בקרב הציבור הרחב, ולקדם רעיונות וגישות חדשות להבנתה.

קתדרת מתנאל מארגנת כנס ציבורי שנתי המוקדש להיבט מרכזי בתולדות הקבלה; סדנת מחקר שנתית המתמקדת בסוגיות מתודולוגיות; וקבוצת מחקר המתכנסת אחת לחודש לאורך השנה ומפגישה קבוצה מחויבת של חוקרים בשלבים שונים של דרכם האקדמית. נוסף על כך, המרכז מוביל פרויקטים מחקריים בתחום מדעי הרוח הדיגיטליים, שמטרתם לקדם את הידע על תולדות הקבלה ולהנגישו לציבור. הקתדרה שואפת לטפח שיתופי פעולה בין חוקרים ומוסדות, במטרה ליצור שיח בין-תחומי מתמשך בחקר הקבלה.

The Matanel chair for Kabbalah studies at the Ben-Zvi Institute promotes the scholarly study of Kabbalah, with an emphasis on that created, taught and practiced among the Jews of the Islamicate world. The center's goal is to raise interest and awareness of this literature in the wider public, and advance new ideas and approaches in its understanding. The Matanel chair organizes an annual public conference devoted to a specific pivotal aspect in the history of the Kabbalah; an annual research workshop focusing on methodological issues; and a research group meeting monthly throughout the year and bringing together a committed group of scholars in different stages of their career. In addition, the center leads digital-humanities research projects aiming to advance knowledge of the history of Kabbalah and make it publicly accessible. The Matanel chair aims to foster collaboration between researchers and institutes with the goal of creating an ongoing multi-disciplinary conversation in the study of Kabbalah
